To start with, a bit of history on the regulations, but no more than a few seconds, I promise!
The Isofix system was invented in 1997 by Britax Römer and the car manufacturer Volkswagen. The system has been compulsory on all vehicles leaving the factory since 2012.
How do I know if my car is fitted with the ISOFIX system?
If you are buying a used car, the ISOFIX system should be included in the vehicle specification. Inside your car, you'll find the two anchorage points at the rear next to your car's belt buckles. They often feature the ISOFIX logo representing a stylised image of a child in a car seat.
What is the ISOFIX system?
The ISOFIX attachment system has now become an international standard, enabling the car seat to be attached to two fixed anchorage points located in the vehicle's chassis. These points are generally located between the seat and backrest of the rear seats. The system provides a safer installation for your child and is simpler than using a conventional seatbelt. It reduces the risk of incorrect installation!
With the ISOFIX system, can I put my child in the car seat at the front of the vehicle?
It's safer for children to travel in the back seat, away from the airbags and dashboard.
If your car is fitted with ISOFIX mountings at the front and you need to place your child in the front seat, make sure that the passenger seat is moved back as far as possible from the dashboard and that your airbag is deactivated.
How do I install and remove an ISOFIX car seat?
Installation and removal may vary slightly from one car seat to another. To begin with, you should carefully consult the instructions for your car seat or car.
However, the most common steps for fitting an ISOFIX baby car seat are as follows:
1. Locate the ISOFIX anchorage points in the car; to do this, you may need to remove a cover or put your hand between the back of the seat and the bench seat.
2. Remove the ISOFIX arms from the child seat and prepare the top tether strap, if fitted.
3. Insert the car seat anchor arms so that they attach securely to the car's anchor points. You should hear and feel a positive ‘click’, and a green icon may appear on the child seat.
4. ISOFIX bars tend to extend far enough to fit cars with longer seats. Retract the ISOFIX bars into the seat base until the back of the child's seat meets the backrest of the car.
What are the advantages of an ISOFIX attachment system?
Quick, safe installation: Simply clip the seat into the vehicle's Isofix points, reducing the risk of installation errors.
Greater stability: The seat is firmly anchored to the vehicle, improving safety in the event of an impact.
Reduced risk of incorrect installation: The ISOFIX system reduces the risk of common errors when using seat belts incorrectly.
An Isofix baby car seat is designed to guarantee optimum safety by being installed easily and securely using the vehicle's ISOFIX system. This enables parents to transport their baby in complete safety.
